Harry's Movie Review

The Lady in the Van is one of those British films that manages to be both completely absurd and absolutely believable at the same time. It’s based on the true story of Mary Shepherd, played by the unbeatable Maggie Smith, who parks her battered old van in playwright Alan Bennett’s driveway in Camden Town. And when I say "parks," I mean she stays for fifteen years. No one – not even the neighbors – can quite believe it, but somehow it works.

What I love about The Lady in the Van is how perfectly it blends dry humor and that distinct British ability to say everything while saying nothing at all. Maggie Smith doesn’t play Miss Shepherd – she becomes her. Stubborn, vulnerable, occasionally maddening, but always impossible to ignore. Alex Jennings is great as Alan Bennett, the reluctant host who slowly learns more about the woman outside his door than he ever expected (or wanted).

The whole film is set against the backdrop of London’s quirky Camden Town, giving the story the perfect dose of real-life eccentricity. There’s no big Hollywood drama here – just honest, sometimes awkward, always fascinating interactions. Director Nicholas Hytner keeps things understated, never pushing for cheap laughs or phony sentimentality. If you appreciate films that make you laugh, cringe, and maybe rethink your definition of “neighbor,” The Lady in the Van is absolutely worth your time.

Trivia & Fun Facts

  • Maggie Smith played Miss Shepherd on stage before ever moving into the van.
  • The film used Mary Shepherd’s real yellow van, with rust, dents and all.
  • Word is, Mary wasn’t much of a cat person, but Alan Bennett definitely had a soft spot for them.
