Harry's Movie Review

Freakier Friday picks up years after the body-swap chaos of the first film. Now Anna has a daughter and a blended family on the horizon, which gives the premise new terrain to cover. The core swap happens again when lightning strikes twice, and we get the expected scrambling. The film is earnest about its premise, which counts for something, but it mostly feels like a remix of a story already told.

Lohan and Curtis navigate the swap mechanics with obvious ease. They know how to play off each other, and there is a comfort to watching them slip back into these roles. Butters and Hammons bring genuine chemistry as the younger generation, and the cast avoids the trap of phoning it in. What the performances lack is much of a chance to surprise you. The script does not give them anywhere unexpected to go.

Director Nisha Ganatra keeps things moving at a steady clip. The film does not waste time, which is a mercy. But there is a flatness to how it all unfolds. The family conflict that drives the plot feels obligatory rather than felt, and the emotional beats arrive on schedule without building real weight. You sense the machinery working, which breaks the spell.

After it ended, I found myself thinking less about what happened and more about how little had actually changed from the original formula. The film knows its assignment and executes it without incident, but incident is not the same as heart. It is comfort food that tastes mostly fine if you do not scrutinize it too closely.
