Harry's Movie Review

Guns Up follows an ex-cop turned mob henchman who has one night to get his family out of the city after a job goes wrong. It's a straightforward action-comedy premise, and the film commits to that without apology. I appreciated that it does not reach for something bigger than it is.

Kevin James grounds the whole thing. He plays the family man angle without turning it maudlin, and the scenes where he is just trying to keep things together feel genuine. Christina Ricci, Luis Guzmán, and the rest of the cast move through the story with ease. The ensemble does not strain for laughs; they let the situations do the work.

Edward Drake keeps the pace moving. At 92 minutes, the film knows when to stop. There is nothing here that feels bloated or unnecessary, which is rare enough that it registers.

What stuck with me is how little the film wastes. No long speeches about family, no manipulation. Just people in bad circumstances doing what they can. That simplicity is its own kind of relief.
