Harry's Movie Review

Play Dirty is a heist film where the mechanics matter. Expert thief Parker assembles a team to pull off a major score, but the obstacles keep multiplying: a South American dictator, the New York mob, a billionaire with resources. The setup is familiar, but Shane Black approaches it with the kind of specificity that makes you lean in. This is not a film that wastes your time on exposition when it can show you a problem and watch the characters solve it.

Wahlberg plays the role with wit, which is exactly what the material needs. He is not performing intelligence; he is letting you watch someone think through complications. Stanfield brings a different energy to his scenes, and the supporting cast, particularly Key and Salazar, feel like actual collaborators rather than cardboard accomplices. What works is that no one is overselling their part. The dialogue moves fast, and the actors trust it enough to not embellish.

Black's direction keeps the pace moving without rushing. The heist itself unfolds with clarity, which is harder to pull off than most films make it look. There is an economy to how scenes are cut and how information lands. The only mild weakness is that the third act has to juggle so many antagonists that the final confrontation loses some focus, but it does not derail what came before.

I walked out of this thinking about how it solved specific narrative problems rather than how it made me feel. That might sound cold, but it is the opposite. It means the film respects your ability to follow it, to appreciate craft, to enjoy a story where the pieces fit together because someone took care with the construction.
