BTS is a seven-member South Korean pop group that debuted on June 13, 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, now HYBE Corporation. They are the best-charting act of the decade on the Billboard Hot 100, with seven number one hits and seven Billboard 200 number one albums. Their fanbase, called ARMY, is estimated at 90 to 136 million people worldwide. If you have never heard of BTS and you are wondering what all the noise is about, this is the post for you.
Who Exactly Is BTS?
BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan, which roughly translates to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" in Korean. The group has seven members, each with a stage name and a real name:
RM (Kim Nam-joon) is the group's leader and primary lyricist. Jin (Kim Seok-jin) is the eldest and one of the main vocalists. Suga (Min Yoon-gi) is a rapper, songwriter and producer. J-Hope (Jung Ho-seok) leads the choreography and brings relentless energy. Jimin (Park Ji-min) is the main dancer and lead vocalist. V (Kim Tae-hyung) is known for his deep baritone and visual flair. Jungkook (Jeon Jung-kook) is the youngest, known as the "golden maknae" because he excels at everything he tries.
Every member writes and produces. That matters. BTS are not a manufactured product handed songs by a label. They are active creators of their own music, and that authenticity is woven into everything they do.
From Seoul to the World: How It All Started
BTS debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment, a small company at the time compared to the major K-pop labels. They were not the polished, high-budget act people know today. Their early years were built on hustle: endless practice, self-produced music, and a direct connection with fans through social media at a time when most K-pop groups kept a distance from their audiences.
The turning point came in 2017 and 2018. Their Love Yourself series addressed themes of self-acceptance, mental health, and identity. Western audiences, especially young people dealing with the same pressures, connected. YouTube and Spotify removed the language barrier. For the first time in pop music history, a group singing primarily in Korean was breaking international chart records.
The Numbers That Prove the Hype Is Real
BTS has seven number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100, more than any other act this decade. "Dynamite" debuted at number one on September 5, 2020, the first time a South Korean act ever debuted at the top of the Hot 100. "Life Goes On" followed, becoming the first primarily Korean-language song to ever top the chart. "Butter" spent ten weeks at number one in 2021.
Their most recent number one, "SWIM," arrived in April 2026 and made them the group with the most Hot 100 number ones of the decade.
Seven Billboard 200 albums have reached the top spot. Their 2022 compilation Proof sold 314,000 equivalent album units in its first week. Their 2026 comeback album ARIRANG debuted at number one within days of release.
They are the first group to surpass 37 billion streams on Spotify.
BTS generate approximately five billion US dollars per year for the South Korean economy, roughly 0.3 percent of the country's GDP. One in thirteen tourists visiting South Korea cites BTS as a reason. When they held a concert in Busan in October 2022, 500,000 visitors came specifically for that show.
The ARMY: BTS's Secret Weapon
ARMY stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth. The official fanbase launched on July 9, 2013, less than a month after the group debuted.
What makes ARMY different from other fanbases is organization. They coordinate global streaming campaigns, Billboard chart voting drives, and charity fundraising with a level of precision that media outlets have compared to grassroots political movements. They have raised millions of dollars for causes ranging from Black Lives Matter to disaster relief in South Korea.
The numbers are staggering. An estimated 90 to 136 million people worldwide identify as ARMY. At peak periods, 36.96 million unique Twitter accounts were posting about BTS. The group has 40-plus million YouTube subscribers and over 30 million Instagram followers.
BTS credit ARMY constantly, in speeches, in songs, in interviews. That relationship is symbiotic and it is a core part of why the phenomenon sustains itself.

Why Jimin Stands Out (Even in a Group of Standouts)
Park Ji-min was born on October 13, 1995 in Busan, South Korea. Before BTS, he attended Busan High School of Arts, where he majored in contemporary dance and ranked first in the department. A teacher there recommended he audition for Big Hit Entertainment. He was accepted, moved to Seoul as a trainee, and debuted with BTS in 2013.
Jimin is widely regarded as BTS's best dancer, which is a significant claim in a group where everyone dances at a professional level. His background in contemporary dance gives him a vocabulary that goes beyond the sharp, synchronized K-pop style. He incorporates fluid isolations, expressive arm work, and a theatrical sense of timing that makes his performances feel like storytelling rather than choreography.
His voice is equally distinctive. Jimin's upper register, a light and controlled falsetto that can shift from delicate to explosive within a single phrase, is unlike anyone else in the group. He is categorized as the lead vocalist and contributes some of the most emotionally affecting moments in BTS's discography.
On stage, the contrast between his technical precision and his visible emotional investment is what people remember. He performs like it costs him something.

Like Crazy: The Moment Jimin Made History
On March 24, 2023, Jimin released his debut solo album FACE. The second single, "Like Crazy," debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on the chart dated April 8, 2023.
That made him the first solo K-pop artist in history to reach number one on the Hot 100. The song knocked Miley Cyrus's "Flowers" off the top spot and outsold PSY's "Gangnam Style," which peaked at number two in 2012 after being one of the most viral songs in internet history.
"Like Crazy" sold over 250,000 digital downloads in its debut week. Jimin simultaneously reached number one on Billboard's Artist 100 chart, the first BTS member to do so as a solo act.
In July 2024 he released his second solo album MUSE. The single "WHO" topped iTunes charts worldwide and surpassed one billion Spotify streams in 118 days. It sold over one million units in the US in 74 days, the fastest any K-pop solo act has reached that milestone this decade. He won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best K-Pop in 2024.

The Military Years: What Happened and What Comes Next
South Korea requires all able-bodied men to complete approximately 18 to 21 months of mandatory military service. BTS members are not exempt. Between December 2022 and December 2023, all seven members enlisted.
Jin was first, enlisting on December 13, 2022 and completing his service on June 12, 2024. J-Hope followed on April 18, 2023, completing service October 16, 2024. Suga, RM, V, Jimin and Jungkook enlisted in late 2023 and were all discharged by June 11, 2025.
After their discharge, the group spent two months together in Los Angeles before returning to the studio. On March 20, 2026, BTS released ARIRANG, their first full group album since 2022. The name references a centuries-old Korean folk song that carries deep national meaning.
On April 9, 2026, the ARIRANG World Tour launched at Goyang Stadium in South Korea. The tour spans 82 shows across 34 cities in 23 countries and runs through March 2027. It is the largest world tour ever undertaken by a South Korean act.

Why BTS Matters Beyond Music
BTS have spoken at the United Nations General Assembly multiple times on youth mental health and self-expression. The South Korean government granted them Special Presidential Envoy status, making their diplomatic role official.
They received five Grammy nominations, more than any other K-pop act in history, including Best Pop Duo or Group Performance for "Dynamite" in 2021 and "Butter" in 2022, and Best Music Video for "Yet to Come" in 2023. They have won zero Grammys.
In July 2026, BTS publicly announced they would not submit music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. This came one month after the Recording Academy introduced a new "Asian Pop Performance" category, a move widely interpreted as a way to keep K-pop acts from competing in main categories. Grammy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. called the decision "saddening." BTS said nothing in response. They did not need to.
The fact that a group from a country of 51 million people, singing in a language spoken by roughly 80 million people worldwide, managed to generate five billion dollars annually, speak at the United Nations, top the Billboard charts seven times, and create a fanbase of potentially 136 million people is not a music industry story. It is a cultural shift.
BTS did not break into the Western music industry. They made the Western music industry come to them.
BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean, which translates to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts." In English, the group also uses the alternative meaning "Beyond the Scene."
BTS has seven members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook.
Yes. All seven members completed mandatory military service by June 2025. They released the album ARIRANG on March 20, 2026 and launched a global world tour in April 2026 covering 82 shows across 23 countries.
All members have strong individual fanbases. Jimin is consistently ranked among the top in global popularity metrics and was the first BTS member to top both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Artist 100 as a solo artist.
ARMY is the official BTS fanbase. The name stands for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth. The fanbase is estimated at 90 to 136 million people worldwide and is known for highly organized streaming and voting campaigns.
BTS received five Grammy nominations but has not won. In July 2026, they announced they would not submit music for the 2027 Grammy Awards, widely seen as a protest against the Recording Academy's creation of a separate "Asian Pop Performance" category.
Park Jimin trained in contemporary dance at the Busan High School of Arts, where he ranked first in his department. He is BTS's main dancer and lead vocalist, known for a distinctive falsetto voice and deeply expressive stage presence.
