Harry's Movie Review

Hacks pairs a legendary Las Vegas comedian with a young, struggling writer in a mentorship that starts transactional and becomes something neither of them expected. The premise sounds like it could collapse into predictable territory, but the show has sharper instincts than that. Smart plays Deborah Vance as a woman still sharp, still angry, still hungry. That hunger is what makes this work.

Smart does the heavy lifting here, but what impresses me is how little she needs to telegraph emotion. When Deborah realizes something about herself or shifts her position, you see it happen before the dialogue catches up. Hannah Einbinder matches her without trying to out-perform her, which matters more than it sounds. The chemistry between them has friction built in, and the show doesn't sand that down for comfort.

Lucia Aniello directs with a steady hand. The pacing moves at a rhythm that suits the material, letting scenes breathe without dawdling. My one hesitation: the show occasionally reaches for sentiment in ways that feel at odds with its sharper moments, though not enough to derail what's working.

After watching, what stays is the image of an aging performer who has not made peace with aging. Not some grand statement about legacy, just a woman who built her whole identity around being wanted, being sharp, being the smartest person in the room. That tension doesn't resolve neatly. Good. It shouldn't.
