Okja

A giant animal, a determined girl, and a company that sees only profit

120 min Adventure, Drama, Science Fiction, Action

Okja is worth watching, and I recommend it without hesitation. Bong Joon Ho makes a family adventure that slowly turns into a sharp look at ownership and greed. It is not flawless, but it earns its emotions and rewards patient viewers. If you can handle a film that changes tone often, Okja is a strong choice.

Harry's Movie Review

Okja is a film about a girl, a giant animal and a company that wants the animal back for reasons that have very little to do with love. I went in expecting a children's adventure with a moral attached, and that is not quite what I got. My opinion is simple: this is a strong film, and I would recommend it with only a few reservations about how it handles its emotions. Bong Joon Ho builds the story on a premise that looks almost naive on the surface, then lets the cynicism in bit by bit. The real subject is what people will do when a living being becomes too valuable to be treated as a friend.

An Seo-hyun carries most of the film, and she does it without big speeches. Mija is stubborn, a little rough and completely convinced she is right, and the actress lets you see a decision forming on her face before she says a word. Tilda Swinton plays two sisters who are less different than they want to appear, and I liked how her voice and posture shift without turning into a costume. Jake Gyllenhaal goes big as a television presenter. It is a risky choice that mostly pays off, even if some scenes lean on his excess a little too long. Steven Yeun gives the activist side of the story a quiet decency, so the group feels like people rather than slogans.

Bong moves between comedy, violence and tenderness very quickly, sometimes inside a single scene. Most of the time the transitions hold, because the direction stays calm and specific. The camera rarely hurries, and it trusts the audience to notice what is happening in the background. My one honest limitation is the final stretch, where the film pushes its message harder than the material needs. A few moments explain feelings that the images had already delivered. The middle section is uneven, but it never felt like filler to me.

What stayed with me was not the chase or the spectacle but a small, uncomfortable thought about how easily affection turns into ownership. I kept thinking about the people who gave the animal a name and the people who only saw a number on a spreadsheet. My own note after the credits reads sehr schöner emotionaler Familienfilm, which means a very beautiful, emotional family film. That is accurate, although the word family covers a lot more than the cute parts suggest.

Harry's Final Thoughts

Harry's Closing Curtain

I recommend Okja to anyone who can handle a film that moves between humor, cruelty and tenderness without warning. It is not perfect, and the ending leans on its message a little too hard. Still, Bong Joon Ho trusts his audience more than most films in this genre do, and that trust is rare. If you want a family adventure with something uncomfortable underneath, this one earns the time.
