Smoky Baked Beans with Bacon Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C (356°F)).
- In a large frying pan over medium heat, fry half the bacon until crisp, about 5 minutes.
- Transfer bacon to paper towels to drain and cool, then crumble. Reserve crumbled bacon and bacon drippings separately.
- Drain and rinse beans.
- In a 9×13-inch (23×33-cm) baking dish with at least 3-inch (7.5-cm) sides, stir together beans, onion, barbecue sauce, maple syrup, brown sugar, both mustards, and crumbled bacon.
- Lay the uncooked bacon slices in a single layer over top of mixture and cover dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake until thickened, about 1 hour more.
- Remove from oven, season with salt and pepper, and serve hot or at room temperature.
- Note: The beans taste best when baked a day in advance, cooled, covered, refrigerated, and then reheated in the oven.
