Old Dogs

Two men, two kids, one business deal on the line

88 min Comedy, Family

Old Dogs aims for a crowd-pleaser and mostly delivers. The premise is thin, and the film does not dig deep, but Travolta and Williams find enough chemistry to make the dad-uncle dynamic work. It is solid family comedy that knows what it is. Worth a watch if you want something light.

Harry's Movie Review

Old Dogs plants two middle-aged business partners into an unexpected childcare crisis. Charlie and Dan have built their Manhattan PR firm together for thirty years, but when Dan discovers he fathered twins from a drunken marriage annulled long ago, their carefully managed world tilts. The film wants to be about grown men learning to be parents while closing a major deal. It is a straightforward premise, and the movie does not pretend to be anything else.

Travolta plays Dan as genuinely out of his depth, which works because he does not try to make the character cooler than he is. Williams as Charlie gets the slightly warmer role, and he handles the uncle-figure stuff without resorting to big emotional speeches. The twins and the other kids feel like actual children rather than props, which matters more than you might think in a film like this. The supporting cast, including Kelly Preston and Lori Loughlin, fill their roles competently without anyone overreaching.

Walt Becker keeps things moving at a pace that respects the audience's time. Eighty-eight minutes is exactly right for this story. The film does stumble when it reaches for sentiment, particularly in moments where it seems to expect you to tear up based on music and closeups rather than anything the characters have actually earned. Those moments feel like obligation rather than genuine character work.

What stayed with me was how comfortable the film is in its own skin. It does not apologize for being a comedy about two men learning to handle kids and a business deal. There is something refreshing about a mainstream film that accepts its own limits and does the work within them instead of stretching toward something deeper it cannot reach.
