Harry's Movie Review

Girl You Know It's True charts the rise and fall of Milli Vanilli, the studio project built around dancers Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan who became global superstars despite never singing a note. The film works because it resists the urge to make this simple. It understands that ambition and fraud can live in the same story, that the people involved were not cartoon villains or saints.

Elan Ben Ali and Tijan Njie carry the film as Pilatus and Morvan. They show us two men who wanted success badly enough to ignore what should have been obvious red flags. There are no big emotional speeches here. Instead, you watch them navigate the gap between what they are selling and what they actually are, and that gap gets wider every scene. The chemistry between them matters because their friendship is what keeps them quiet for as long as they are.

Verhoeven keeps the pace moving through the hit singles and the award wins and the inevitable unraveling. The film takes place across Munich and Los Angeles and the music industry machinery that connected them, which gives it room to breathe. There is one moment where the tension slackens slightly in the middle, but it picks back up before it becomes a problem.

What stayed with me was how ordinary the whole thing felt. These were not uniquely talented deceivers or victims of some elaborate trap. They were people who wanted to be famous, agreed to something that should not have worked, and then watched it not work. The scandal that followed was huge. The circumstances that made it possible were not.
